Short answer

That changes as your dog grows. Per the ASPCA, young puppies eat four times a day, then three by about three months and two by about six months. Most adult dogs over a year old can eat once daily, though big dogs and those at risk of bloat are better off with two smaller meals.

What the sources say

Young puppies have small stomachs and high energy needs, so they eat often: four times a day at first, dropping to three around three months and to two around six months. [1]

After the first year, a single daily meal works for many dogs. Big dogs and breeds at risk of bloat usually do better with the food split into two. [1]

Treats and toppers such as cooked egg or vegetables should stay a small slice of the diet, roughly a tenth at most. [1]

Too many table scraps can unbalance nutrition, encourage fussy eating and add weight, so keep them rare. [1]

Water should always be available. Clean the bowls regularly. [1]

Ask your vet how much your dog should eat.

FAQ

Why do big dogs get two meals?

Splitting food into two smaller meals is the ASPCA's suggestion for large dogs and dogs at risk of bloat.

Can I add people food?

Only a little. The ASPCA suggests keeping extras to about a tenth of what your dog eats, since a lot of table food can cause health and weight problems.
